<upd_detl>It's plainly a mess, but it seems that the lupus is in or out depending on which way the wind blows. I wondered about "Canis lupus familiaris or Canis familiaris", but having parentheses is simpler. Rene's rules does do say "Whenever possible", but I think this is a good one to bend a bit.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>It's certainly not the most common use, but shouldn't we squeeze "canine" in here somewhere?  Particularly for medical/science terms. Eijiro has 95 collocations.

Search "canine oral health", for example, as something common in modern English.  Or "canine heart disease", (which I think would have to become "heart disease in dogs", not "dog heart disease", though google says the latter is possible).
