It's a question of how far you push users, who are usually not
specialists. For an entry like スルナーイ the tag "per:" is sort-of
self-explanatory, but if it changes to "fas:" it will need some sort
of added documentation.

Sadly true.

 

There is annoying inconsistency with some of the /T and 639-3 codes.
The differences with the /B and 639-2 codes is plainly the use of the
language's own nomenclature, e.g. "deu" instead of "ger", but that's
only been partially done. The 639-3 codes for Swedish and Finnish
are "swe" and "fin", but to be consistent they should be something like
"sve" and "suo". "spa" for Spanish is the same. Seems some languages
have had political-correctness pushed further than others.

I think there were also questions of collision: more than one language wanted 'sue' for example.
