Catching up
Well, have started to catch up the backlog of edits,
but I realise that it will take quite a while. So what I
have decided to do is:
(a) process each new batch daily;
(b) push ahead with Stu in working on the online database, as
I think it is very important to get people effectively
editing entries themselves;
(c) slowly grind down the 30 or so backlogged days of updates
Wrt to (b), I have started working on a program that Stu
had partly written to extract my current textfile
database from the postgresSQL form. It's progressing well
and barring hitches in a few days I should be able to reconstitute
my format from the database, i.e. we will have a roundtrip
possible. This is important as it means all my existing
utilities can be used to generate JMdict, edict, etc. and
hence we can focus on getting the online edits in place.
Stuart has put an immense amount of work into the library
routines and documentation. It has made it possible for
a Perl neophyte like me to make progress quickly. Most
impressed.
Cheers
Jim
