Speaking of the wishlist, one of the items on it is "gps coordinates
for place names" (with the comment, "dream on 8-)" :-)).

I came across a file of about 50K Japanese place names with lat/long,
type of name (town, natural feature, etc), significance metric, and
other info. The bad news is that the names are romaji (although they
do seem to have long vowels marked) so I'm not sure if it is feasabile
to match them up with JMnedict entries.

I recall when the wishlist item was discussed here, there was some
opposition to adding this kind of info to JMnedict, but I thought I would
mention the file in case its existence changes any minds, or it's of
interest to anyone else.

The file is available at http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.htm
(along with similar files for many other countries). A description of
the fields used in the files is at http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/gis_countryfiles.htm
