Ah. Perhaps we are at cross-purposes. I had no problem with the 
"edit-gfreq" file. It was the "edict-over1M.xls" that I can't convert
to anything useful. Word lets you save a file as "Encoded text" and
prompts for the coding. Excel doesn't do that and seems to hose all the
non-ASCIIs when saving as text or csv.
