About The Group
The Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group has been established as a group within the School of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University. The Group's objective is to undertake the compilation of electronic dictionaries, and to carry out research and development in applied computational linguistics with particular emphasis on computer lexicography. |

| The Group is currently the home of the "EDICT Project" which has been operating for many years, and which has led to the compilation of a number of major Japanese-English dictionary files. The copyright for these files has been assigned to the Group. The EDICT Project.
The JMdict/EDICT project has as its goal the production of a freely available Japanese/English Dictionary in machine-readable form. |

| The project was begun in 1991 by the current editor Jim Breen when an early DOS-based Japanese word-processor (MOKE - Mark's Own Kanji Editor) was released, containing an initial small version of the EDICT file. This was progressively expanded and edited over the following years. In 1999 the EDICT, which by this time contained about 60,000 entries, was converted into an expanded format and the first XML-format JMdict file released. | このプロジェクトは1991年、初期のDOSベースの日本語ワードプロセッサー（MOKE ? | The growth in entries in the file is largely due to the efforts of Mr. Breen and the many people who contributed entries to it over the years. The increase in entry numbers has slowed as the file has achieved coverage of a large proportion of the Japanese lexicon. Much of the editorial work in recent years has concentrated on amendments and expansion to existing entries. | ファイルへの入力数がここまで成長したのは、ブリーン氏、及び何年にもわたって入力に貢献してきた多くの人々の努力によるものであります。ファイルが日本語語彙の大部分をカバーしたことで入力数の伸びは緩やかになり、近年の編集作業の多くは、修正、及び既に入力された項目を発展させることに移行しています。 |

Usage of the Dictionary Files.
In February 2003 it was decided to make the files more freely available for use, both commercial and non-commercial, subject to a number of conditions mainly to ensure adequate and appropriate acknowledgement. |

| At the same time, users of the files who are successful in using or incorporating the files in a commercial product or service are requested to make a donation to the Group commensurate with the benefits they receive from the files.
