Submission guidelines for phrases

In addition to nouns, particles, verbs in dictionary form, etc. JMDict also includes many 'phrase' type and irregular entries (usually with the pos (exp)). I would like to suggest the following for consideration when deciding whether it is appropriate to add a 'phrase' or not.

Is the entry ...

• A set phrase or saying (e.g. 猫に小判)
• Its meaning is not obvious from its constituent parts (e.g. 音をあげる)
• Useful for English look up. (e.g. looking up "full bodied" will find こくのある, but wouldn't find 酷・こく)
• Is in common use (e.g. 関係ない is both in common use objectively (21,600,000 googits) and also accounts for 13% of all uses of 関係 in the Tanaka Corpus)
• Is useful as an x-ref for an existing reference. (e.g. ～のない entries have antonym x-refs to ～のある, (abbr) entries often have x-refs to the full version)
• Using as an x-ref for a sense in an existing reference helps explain that sense (e.g. the 想像に任せる x-ref from 任せる sense 2).

inconsistent dictionary codes

• v5z OR vz Godan verb - -zuru special class (alternative form of -jiru verbs)

vz in the drop down, v5z in the documentation.

• gram grammatical term
• neg-v negative verb (when used with)
• neg negative (in a negative sentence, or with negative verb)
• X rude or X-rated term (not displayed in educational software)
• qv quod vide (see another entry)

In documentation, not in drop-down

I have made the documentation and dropdowns consistent (I think) but I don't know what the problem with "X" is.Jimbreen 06:20, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

You don't know why it isn't included in the dropdowns ?

Cross-ref's with readings

Cross-references must refer to other dictionary entries. Enter one 
or more headwords, and where the reference is to a particular 
headword/reading combination, use the format: kanji・reading, 
e.g., 金本位・かねほんい.

Is that still policy? I thought it turned out there was some problem with crossrefs with readings - they're displayed something like (See 止める,_とめる) now aren't they?

It's still policy. WWWJDIC displays them in the format you quote for want of something better to do. For an xref like 金本位・かねほんい I should put only the 金本位 as the hyperlink.Jimbreen 00:27, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
